Radiators not heating properly? Common causes and fixes

A radiator that is warm in some places and stubbornly cold in others is one of the most common heating complaints, and helpfully, where the cold patch sits usually tells you a lot about the cause before anyone even opens a toolbox. A few of these are a five-minute DIY job; a few genuinely need a qualified engineer.

If a radiator is cold at the top but warm at the bottom, the most likely cause is trapped air in the system, and the fix is bleeding the radiator. With the heating switched off and the radiator cool enough to touch safely, use a radiator key on the bleed valve โ€” usually a small square-cut valve at one end near the top of the radiator โ€” turn it slowly anti-clockwise a small amount, and you should hear a hiss of escaping air. Hold a cloth or small container underneath, since water follows the air once the air has cleared, and close the valve as soon as you get a steady trickle of water rather than a hiss. This is one of the more straightforward maintenance tasks most homeowners can safely do themselves, and it is worth checking radiators once or twice a year, particularly at the start of the heating season.

The opposite pattern โ€” cold at the bottom, warm at the top, or a cold patch in the middle of the radiator โ€” points to something bleeding will not fix: sludge. Over years, corrosion inside the central heating system produces a dark, sometimes magnetic sludge (often called magnetite) that settles at the bottom of radiators and gradually blocks water flow through them. A single very sludged radiator can sometimes be removed and flushed out separately, but if several radiators show the same pattern, it usually points to sludge throughout the system rather than one radiator in isolation, and a proper fix generally means a power flush โ€” pumping a cleaning fluid through the whole system at high flow to break up and remove the build-up โ€” carried out by a qualified heating engineer, sometimes followed by fitting a magnetic filter near the boiler to catch debris before it recirculates.

If an entire radiator stays cold while the rest of the house heats normally, the first things to check are the valves at either end โ€” the thermostatic radiator valve (TRV), often the one with a numbered dial, and the lockshield valve at the other end, which is normally left in a fixed position and not adjusted casually. A TRV that is stuck, often after being left in one position for a long time, is a common and often simple fix โ€” turning it up and down a few times, or in some cases just tapping the pin inside gently, can free it. If both valves are open and the radiator is still stone cold, and bleeding does not help, it is worth having a heating engineer check whether the radiator itself has failed or whether the system needs balancing.

Balancing a heating system means adjusting the lockshield valve on each radiator so that water flows through all of them at roughly the right rate relative to their size and distance from the boiler, rather than the nearest radiators taking most of the flow and leaving the furthest ones lukewarm. A system that was never properly balanced when installed, or that has had radiators added or replaced since, can leave some rooms consistently cooler than others even though every valve is technically open and nothing is actually broken. This is a job for a heating engineer with the right gauges, since getting it wrong by feel alone tends to just move the problem to a different radiator.

If none of the radiators are heating properly, rather than just one or two, the cause is less likely to be the radiators themselves and more likely to be upstream โ€” low system pressure (worth checking the pressure gauge on the boiler, which usually has a marked safe range), a fault with the circulating pump that moves hot water around the system, a boiler that is not firing correctly, or a broken thermostat or programmer not calling for heat properly. As a rough guide, bleeding a radiator and gently freeing a stuck TRV are reasonable to try yourself. Power flushing, balancing a whole system, replacing valves or radiators, and anything involving the boiler itself are worth leaving to a qualified heating engineer โ€” partly for safety, and partly because getting these wrong can just move the same problem somewhere else in the system rather than fixing it.
